FULVIO GONELLA

Art brut

Fulvio Gonella was born in 1973 in Italy. Since his teenage years, he has been fascinated by Art Brut, integrating the radical principles of this movement with a dynamic, gestural style influenced by street art, graffiti, graphic design, and folk imagery. His work merges intense visual energy with an imaginative and mysterious sensibility, evoking deep emotional archetypes. As Ian Chilvers once stated, he creates “works for himself, as a kind of private theater.”

Gonella takes this idea even further—his artistic “theater” is not just for the artist himself but also for the public. Within his theatrical compositions, various elements intertwine in a surreal symphony. Using acrylics, crayons, and enamel—literally a “mixed media” approach—he crafts figures with primitive features and simplified lines, creating a sense of extreme flatness that appears to disregard conventional spatial structures. However, as critic Andres Isaac Santana notes, “Gonella’s work is not a rejection of established cultural traditions or formal artistic training… On the contrary, his creations stem from a profound understanding of the artistic field and a rigorously structured conceptual approach.”
